What We Do
The program received its first juvenile case in December 2002 but has since expanded to adult cases and is now involved in an array of other activities.

Adult Program
Central Virginia Restorative Justice launched an adult program in 2005. It serves adult offenders and those who have been victimized by them. Referred clients are repeat offenders appearing in the Charlottesville General District Court who face possible incarceration for their crimes. The voluntary program lasts 6 to 12 months and staff assist clients in examining behavior, identifying risk factors for crime, and building upon talents and personal resources. In some cases, mentoring, employment counseling, and the Support and Accountability Conference are also elements of the program. After successfully completing the program, clients become contributing members of their family and the community.

In the second half of 2007, Central Virginia Restorative Justice initiated a major shift in our adult program. At program staff's urging, the Restorative Justice in the General District Court Committee decided to transition our existing program to one that is more fully a restorative justice program, the core of which will be the Support and Accountability Conference.  This positive change marks a significant development for our program and represents the court's increased confidence in the value of restorative processes.  We are eager to begin serving victims, community members, and offenders in the adult court in a way that mirrors our successes with the juvenile program.
